National Laboratory of the Rockies Launches New Cornerstone LMS
The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, partnered with eSkillz to implement a new Cornerstone OnDemand Learning Management System. Over nearly two years, the project navigated government shutdowns, an infrastructure migration, and an organizational name change. The implementation culminated in the launch of a centralized platform designed to help employees access training, manage learning requirements, and pursue professional development.

Challenge
NLR faced a complex LMS implementation involving data migration, system integrations, reporting, and changing technical requirements amid government shutdowns and an organizational name change.
Solution
eSkillz implemented Cornerstone Learning, migrated master and historical data, configured SSO and virtual instructor-led training integrations, established reporting capabilities, and prepared 250 learning assignments for launch.

Client challenge
NLR’s implementation involved substantial work across learning administration, data, and technical integrations. Master and historical records needed to be prepared and migrated, the learning catalog and portal configured, and integrations and reporting established. Learning assignments also needed to be ready for launch.
Several changes added complexity along the way. During the implementation, the team worked through government shutdowns and a migration to the AWS FedRAMP environment. The organization’s renaming from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to the National Laboratory of the Rockies also required an LMS portal name change and related technical rework.
The project required coordination across these changes while continuing the configuration, data preparation, and testing needed to bring the new learning environment into use.
eSkillz Solution
eSkillz supported both the functional and technical components of the implementation, working with NLR to configure Cornerstone around its learning requirements and processes.
An onsite Business Process Alignment workshop in Colorado helped connect those requirements to the platform setup. This work supported decisions about how NLR would organize and administer learning within its new environment.
The implementation included:
- Learning configuration: Cornerstone Learning, portal configuration, learning catalog setup, and 250 learning assignments prepared for go-live.
- Data Migration: Data transformation and the loading of master and historical records.
- Access and integrations: A custom login page, single sign-on (SSO), a virtual instructor-led training (vILT) integration, and an inbound data feed.
- Reporting: Reporting 2.0 and custom inbound and outbound reporting feeds.
Throughout the project, eSkillz consultants supported the work across these areas and adapted the implementation as requirements changed. That included supporting the AWS FedRAMP migration and the portal rename, providing continuity through the technical rework required before launch.
- Cornerstone Learning
- Master data load
- Historical data load
- Data transformation
- Inbound data feed
- vILT integration
- Custom login page
- Single sign-on
- Reporting 2.0
Results
NLR successfully launched its new Cornerstone LMS with 250 learning assignments configured for go-live. Migrated master and historical data, connected systems, and reporting capabilities were in place to support the new environment.
The platform gives NLR a centralized home for employee training, learning requirements, and professional development. Single sign-on supports employee access, while the vILT integration connects virtual instructor-led training with the broader learning environment.
The successful launch reflects the ability of eSkillz to guide a complex LMS implementation through changing requirements. By maintaining continuity through government shutdowns, the AWS FedRAMP migration, and NLR’s organizational rename, eSkillz helped bring nearly two years of work to a successful go-live.
